Setting up a hardware wallet for the first time can feel intimidating. You are holding a device that will control access to potentially thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency, and the fear of making a mistake that could lead to lost funds is real. The good news is that the Ledger Nano X setup process is designed to be straightforward, and if you follow the steps carefully, you will have a securely configured wallet in about 15-20 minutes.
In this guide, we will walk through the entire process from unboxing to making your first transaction. We will also cover critical security practices that protect you from the most common mistakes users make during setup.
Before starting, if you want to check the live prices of the coins you plan to store, our Price Tracker at Coin Advice lets you monitor the market in real-time.
What You Need Before Starting
- A Ledger Nano X (bought directly from Ledger or an authorized reseller)
- The provided USB-C cable
- A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) or smartphone (iOS/Android)
- Ledger Live software (download from the official site)
- A pen and the recovery sheet (included in the box)
- About 20 minutes of uninterrupted time
Step 1: Download and Install Ledger Live
Before touching your Nano X, go to the official Ledger website and download Ledger Live for your operating system. This is the companion software that manages your device, installs apps, and lets you send/receive crypto.
Never download Ledger Live from third-party sites or click links in emails. Always type the URL manually or use a trusted bookmark.Install the software and open it. You will see a welcome screen with options to set up a new device or restore an existing one. Keep this window open and move to your physical device.
Step 2: Initialize the Ledger Nano X
Unbox your Ledger Nano X and connect it to your computer using the USB-C cable. The device should power on and display "Welcome" on the screen.
Press both buttons simultaneously to navigate through the welcome messages until you see "Set up as new device" or "Restore device." Since this is a fresh setup, choose "Set up as new device" by pressing both buttons.
The device will then ask you to choose a PIN code. This is a 4-8 digit code that you will enter each time you use the device. Use the two buttons to select digits (press right to increment, left to decrement, both to confirm). Choose a PIN you can remember but that is not obvious (avoid 1234, 1111, etc.).
Write down your PIN and store it securely. If you forget it, you will need to reset the device and restore using your seed phrase.Step 3: Generate Your 24-Word Seed Phrase
After setting the PIN, the Nano X will offer to generate a new recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase or mnemonic). This is the most critical moment in the entire setup process.
The device will display 24 words one by one. Write down each word on the provided recovery sheet in the exact order shown. The words are displayed in two sets of 12 for easier handling.
Critical Security Rules:
- Never take a photo of your seed phrase with your phone or any camera.
- Never store it in a text file, email, or cloud storage.
- Never share it with anyone, including Ledger support (they will never ask for it).
- Write it clearly - if your handwriting is messy, print the words or write very carefully.
- Double-check each word as you write it down.
Your seed phrase is the master key to all your cryptocurrency. Anyone who has it can steal your funds without needing the physical device. Conversely, if you lose your Ledger, you can restore your entire portfolio on a new device using this phrase.
Step 4: Confirm Your Seed Phrase
The Nano X will then ask you to confirm your seed phrase by selecting words in a specific order. This ensures you wrote them down correctly. Follow the prompts and select the requested words using the device buttons.
If you make a mistake here, do not panic. The device will let you start over. This confirmation step is actually helpful because it forces you to verify that your written copy is accurate.
Once confirmed, your device is initialized and ready to use. The main menu will appear on the screen.
Step 5: Connect Ledger Live to Your Device
Return to the Ledger Live software on your computer. It should detect your Nano X. Follow the on-screen prompts to authenticate the connection. Ledger Live will ask you to verify that your device is genuine by completing a challenge-response process.
Once connected, Ledger Live will display your dashboard. You can now install apps for different cryptocurrencies.
If you plan to trade some of your holdings on exchanges, you might want to check our DEX Scanner to compare prices across decentralized exchanges before moving funds off your Ledger.
Step 6: Install Cryptocurrency Apps
To manage different cryptocurrencies, you need to install specific apps on your Nano X. For example, to store Bitcoin, you need the Bitcoin app. For Ethereum, you need the Ethereum app.
In Ledger Live:
- Go to the "Manager" tab
- Connect and unlock your Nano X
- Search for the cryptocurrency you want (e.g., Bitcoin)
- Click "Install"
The app will download and install on your device. The Nano X can hold about 100 apps simultaneously, which is plenty for most users. If you run out of space, you can uninstall apps (your funds remain safe on the blockchain) and reinstall them later.
Step 7: Create Accounts and Receive Crypto
Now that you have apps installed, you need to create accounts in Ledger Live to actually receive funds.
- Go to the "Accounts" tab
- Click "Add account"
- Select the cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin)
- Connect and unlock your Nano X with the corresponding app open
- Ledger Live will create an account and show you your receiving address
Step 8: Test with a Small Amount
Before transferring your life savings, send a small test amount first. For example, if you plan to store 1 Bitcoin, send 0.001 BTC first. Wait for it to arrive, verify it shows in Ledger Live, and then send the remainder.
This test transaction accomplishes two things:
- Confirms you have the correct address and setup
- Gives you confidence in the process for future transactions
Using Your Ledger with DeFi
One of the powerful features of Ledger is using it as a secure signing device for DeFi applications. By connecting your Ledger to MetaMask, you can interact with Uniswap, Aave, Compound, and other DeFi protocols while keeping your private keys offline.
If you are exploring new DeFi tokens, use our Token Checker tool to assess potential risks before connecting your wallet to unfamiliar protocols. For tracking your investment performance, our Profit Calculator can help you calculate returns.
Many DeFi users also use aggregation platforms like 1inch to find the best trading prices across multiple DEXs while keeping their keys secure on their Ledger.
Mobile Setup (Optional)
The Ledger Nano X supports Bluetooth connectivity for mobile use. To set it up:
- Download Ledger Live mobile app
- Open the app and select "Connect device"
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone and Nano X
- Pair the devices following the prompts
Remember, no private keys are transmitted over Bluetooth. The connection only relays transaction metadata, and you still need to physically press the buttons on your Nano X to confirm any transaction.
Maintaining Your Ledger
- Firmware updates: Ledger periodically releases firmware updates. Install them through Ledger Live when prompted.
- Seed phrase storage: Store your recovery sheet in a secure, fireproof location. Some users etch it into metal plates for maximum durability.
- PIN confidentiality: Never share your PIN. If someone has physical access to your device and knows the PIN, they can send transactions.
- Regular checks: Periodically verify your seed phrase is still readable and stored safely.
Where to Buy Crypto for Your Ledger
Once your Ledger is set up, you can buy crypto through various platforms and send it to your hardware wallet:
- Coinbase - Great for beginners, easy bank transfers
- Binance - Low fees, huge selection
- Bybit - Excellent for trading
- OKX - Strong DeFi integration
- Nexo - Earn interest on your holdings
Always withdraw to your Ledger address and verify the address on the device screen before confirming the withdrawal.
