One of the most common crypto scams involves fake or tampered hardware wallets. Scammers buy Ledger devices, pre-configure them with their own seed phrases, reseal the packaging, and sell them on Amazon, eBay, or other third-party marketplaces.
When you receive the device, it looks brand new. You deposit crypto, thinking you are the only one with the seed phrase. Then the scammer drains your funds using the seed they already have.
In this guide, we will show you exactly how to verify your Ledger device is genuine and untampered before you deposit a single cent.

Critical Rule: Only Buy Direct
The absolute best way to ensure authenticity is to only buy from the official Ledger website or authorized resellers.
- Never buy from Amazon third-party sellers (even if "Amazon Fulfilled")
- Never buy from eBay or other auction sites
- Never buy from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist
- Never buy from a "friend" who got a "great deal"
Even if the price is cheaper elsewhere, the risk of receiving a tampered device is not worth the savings.
Step1: Inspect the Packaging
When you receive your Ledger, inspect the box carefully:
Check for Tamper-Evident Seals
- The box should have tamper-evident seals
- Look for any signs of re-gluing or re-sealing
- The Ledger logo and printing should be crisp and clear
- No misspellings or poor-quality printing
Check the Contents
A genuine Ledger box contains:
- The Ledger device (Nano X, S Plus, or Stax)
- USB cable (USB-C to USB-A or USB-C)
- Recovery sheets (for writing your seed phrase)
- Getting started leaflet
- Keychain and lanyard (sometimes)
If anything is missing or looks cheap/photocopied, be suspicious.
Step2: Initial Device Boot
When you first turn on your new Ledger:
- Connect it to your computer via USB-C
- The device should display "Welcome" on the screen
- It should NOT show a pre-generated seed phrase
If the device immediately shows a 24-word seed phrase without you choosing "Set up as new device," it is compromised. Return it immediately.
Step3: Perform Genuine Check via Ledger Live
Ledger Live has a built-in "Genuine Check" process:
- Open Ledger Live on your computer
- Go to "My Ledger" or "Manager" tab
- Connect your new Ledger and enter your PIN (you will need to set one first)
- Ledger Live will attempt to communicate with the device
- A "Genuine Check" prompt may appear
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the verification
If Ledger Live reports the device as genuine, it has cryptographically verified that the firmware is authentic and has not been modified.
Step4: Set Up as NEW Device (Critical!)
This is the most important step:
- On your new Ledger, navigate to initial setup
- Choose "Set up as new device" (NOT "Restore device")
- The device will generate a NEW 24-word seed phrase
- Write down these words on the provided recovery sheet
- Verify the words by re-entering them on the device
By generating a new seed phrase directly on the device, you ensure that only you know the keys. Even if the device was tampered with, a new seed phrase generated on the secure element should be safe (though you should still return suspicious devices).
Step5: Verify the Seed Phrase is New
After setting up, you can do a quick check:
- Install the Bitcoin app on your Ledger via Ledger Live
- Generate a receiving address (Accounts β Receive β Bitcoin)
- Verify this address on your Ledger screen
- Write down the first and last 4 characters of the address
- Reset the device (enter wrong PIN 3 times)
- Restore using your new seed phrase
- Generate the same Bitcoin address again
- Verify it matches the one you wrote down
This confirms:
- Your seed phrase works correctly
- The device generates addresses properly
- You have successfully backed up your keys
Red Flags: When to Return Your Ledger
Return the device immediately if:
- Pre-generated seed phrase - Device shows words without you choosing "new"
- Packaging looks tampered - Resealed, glue marks, poor printing
- Genuine check fails - Ledger Live says device is not genuine
- Bought from unauthorized seller - Third-party Amazon/eBay sellers
- Missing accessories - No recovery sheets, no cable, etc.
- Suspicious behavior - Device acts strangely, screens look off
What If You Already Bought from Amazon/eBay?
If you already have a device from a third-party seller:
- Do NOT deposit any crypto to it yet
- Perform all the verification steps above
- Generate a NEW seed phrase on the device
- If it lets you do this and genuine check passes, it might be safe
- Consider buying a new one from the official site anyway for peace of mind
Ledger's Anti-Tamper Measures
Ledger has implemented several measures to combat fakes:
- Genuine Check: Cryptographic verification in Ledger Live
- Secure Element: Extremely difficult to clone or modify
- Authorized Reseller Program: Buying from verified partners
- Packaging Improvements: Better tamper-evident seals over time
However, scammers constantly adapt. Your vigilance is the ultimate protection.

Final Thoughts
Verifying your Ledger's authenticity is not optionalβit is essential. A compromised device can lead to total loss of funds, no matter how careful you are afterward.
The golden rules:- Only buy from the official Ledger website
- Set up as a NEW device (generate new seed)
- Perform the genuine check in Ledger Live
- If anything seems off, return it immediately
Your crypto security starts with the device itself. Do not take shortcuts.
